The Bucket of Sin: Recipe for an easy chocolate trifle

This is a recipe for an easy chocolate trifle, which has hilariously (or prophetically) become known as the bucket of sin in our house.

Start with a chocolate cake mix and instant chocolate pudding. Mix each separately, according to the package directions. Place the pudding in the fridge to set and the cake in the oven to bake.

Finished dessert

My husband and I, many moons ago, B.C. (before children), used to invite college students into our home on Friday nights for a home-cooked meal. I would get home from work and whip up some culinary delight on a massive scale, and then we would eat, study the Bible and visit with these folks until late. One week, I made this dessert, and was at a loss of what to call it. I always make it in this glass bucket, and then one of the students said something along the lines of, “”Man, this is so good it must be sin!” Yep. Thus, the dessert was deemed, “The Bucket of Sin.” These days, my children will even say they’ve eaten too much of this concoction. Keep a watch over yourself, precious reader.

Notes

I like to make this the day before and hold off on the whipped topping until right before serving.
I used to put whipped topping between the layers, but as I’ve gotten older, it’s too much work without the return. Also, it looks weird to me as the whipped topping absorbs the chocolate over a couple of days.
Store this dessert in the refrigerator.
This dessert is also beautiful with shaved chocolate on top!
