Things are not as they seem

My friend. We are sitting in early December. All around us, people complain about how busy and frantic this season has become. I want to offer you hope, and confirmation, that things are not as they seem.

There are 22 chapters in the Revelation. Start reading this book today. Read just a chapter each day, and meditate on the theme that things are not as they seem. Step outside the bustle, and sit with this book.

Take the blessing in 1:3 literally and have your audio Bible read the chapter to you, or read it to yourself, or to a friend. I exhort you, read the Revelation. Don’t get stuck on the understanding of every symbol, picture, number or word. Simply read the Revelation.

Notice the small themes: a book of hearing, then seeing. And a book of Jesus. A book of a throne, and Someone on it. A book of a Lamb who is worthy. There are disturbing scenes, as well. Beasts, seals, trumpets, dragons and war. But oh, the heavenly victory! The beauty of eternity is in my heart and on each page. Things are definitely not as they seem.

While we celebrate the God of the universe, come to earth as a baby, things are certainly not as they seem. And looking ahead to the coming of Christ again, I am more convinced, things are not as they seem.

Don’t miss the treasure packed into this wildly wonderful Revelation to John. Make some time and read through the pages during this season where the world is ready to accept that things are not as they seem.

Shalom.

The haunting specter of condemnation hounded my thoughts this week. Insidious and persistent in its attacks, it focused its force on memories of the past. Oh, my heart. It’s as if every day I must grow in my capacity for sorrow. Sure, there is joy and happiness and good times, yet increasingly, I find myself mourning the state of this world. This is when I am sometimes most thankful that this world is not my home. It is full of brokenness, hurt, evil and chaos.
